Collection Schedule
Garbage and yard waste are picked up weekly, and recycling is every other week on a dedicated collection day.
The only exception to pick-up is the week of Christmas, if your collection day falls on Christmas day, your garbage will be picked up the following day. All other collections that week will be one day later than usual.
Dedicated pick-up day information can be found on our virtual collection schedule. Please see the 2025 Collection Calendar for assistance in determining what weeks are your designated recycling pickup week
Missed Collection
The City of Richland is committed to providing quality service to its residents. If your garbage was missed, please call our office by noon the next day at (509) 942-7700.
Routes and drivers change from time to time, so collection times may vary. Please ensure your containers are at the curb for service by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled day. Call back fees apply when containers are not at the curb on time.
Yard Waste Collection
NEW: If you are going to bag yard waste, please only use compostable bags. Using certified compostable bags allows your yard waste to be composted at the landfill. Compostable bags are available for free at the landfill for Richland residents starting Oct. 16th (while supplies last, limit 15 per visit). They can also be purchased from Amazon, or locally at Ace Hardware. Look for the BPI Compostable symbol on the outside of the packaging. Extra bagged yard waste placed at the curb will be picked up for an additional charge (except during Fall Cleanup, when it is free).
Yard waste is collected each week on your normal collection day, weather permitting. Occasionally yard waste must be combined with trash due to vehicle maintenance issues or staffing issues. Also, during the winter months when the temperature is below freezing, yard waste may not be collected due to frozen debris and container damage or hazardous road conditions. Staff will make announcements on the City's Facebook page if collection is delayed or cancelled.
Containers need to be placed at the curb on the regular collection day by 6:00 a.m. for service. Yard waste is composted at the Horn Rapids Landfill. Click here for an informational video.
What to do with extra yard waste
- Get an additional yard waste container for $2/month
- Use mulching lawn mower to reduce yard waste
- Compost at home
- Place extra yard waste in your gray garbage can
- Bring the extra yard waste to the Horn Rapids Landfill for free (Richland residents, clean yard debris only).
Reminders for using your yard waste container
- Place only loose grass, leaves, plant trimmings, garden debris like inedible fruits and vegetables, non-treated wood and branches less than 4" in diameter in container.
- Place dry, woody material at the bottom of the can to keep grass and leaves from getting compacted in the bottom.
- Prop the lid open to allow moisture to escape and control odor.
- DO NOT place dirt, rocks, treated or glued wood, animal waste, meat or processed food, or any other garbage in the container.
- DO NOT bag yard waste, unless using certified compostable bags, see information above. Plastic bags do not break down and retrieving plastic bags from the composting process is labor intensive and expensive.
- Garbage is not allowed in the yard waste container. Repeat offenders are charged a load contamination fee of $10.00.
- If the container is too heavy or compacted with too much yard debris, the truck cannot empty the container. Follow the weight guidelines on the container. If the container cannot be emptied due to weight, material will have to be removed and a call back fee will be charged to dispatch a truck back.
